FAQs

What qualifications do I need to take a short course?

No qualifications are required, but familiarity with Arabic and Persian Islamic terminology is recommended, as well as a good knowledge of English.

Are these courses recognised by other academic institutions?

At the moment, our courses are not accredited and cannot be used to apply to other colleges and universities; however, a certificate of completion will be issued on the completion of all sessions of a live course.

Do I have to be a Shīʿa Muslim to take a course?

We welcome applicants from all religious and cultural backgrounds.

Can I be refunded if I do not complete the course?

We cannot refund courses once they have been booked, except where you have not taken any class at all.

Why should I choose this course?

We offer quality courses for people who wish to study in a flexible way without having to commit themselves to a full academic programme, such as a Bachelor’s Degree. You can study from anywhere in the world. Courses are interactive and critical discussion is welcome. You will also get guidance on how to produce an essay that meets top academic standards, which can prepare you for further study.

What format do the courses take: are they interactive or written?

We utilise a variety of on-line systems, such as Skype and Zoom, which enables the tutor to interact live with students logging on from any part of the world. It is recommended to read the course materials in preparation for each on-line class, but if you do not have time to do so, that is fine. The method of studying the materials will be tailored to your requirements.

How long do the courses last?

Courses consist of six or eight sessions and are held once a week at a time that is convenient for you. The Henry Corbin Study Classes are ongoing until the book we are translating together has been completed.

What is the timing for each session?

Sessions are for one-and-a-half hours: forty-five minutes for the lecture and forty-five minutes for discussion and questions. The timing of the sessions is fixed and you will need to be able to log on at that time. Session times can be changed to ensure convenience for all candidates.

What kind of topics can I study?

We offer several short courses: Early Shīʿī History; Tenets of Tashayyu’ (Shi‘ism); Esoteric Knowledge in Tashayyu’; Islamic Trends in African History and Comparative Literature. For more information, please click on the ‘Courses’ tab in the Menu Bar. Currently students are also taking private classes in the biographies of the prophets.

Is there an examination?

There is no examination at the end of the course, but there is an optional essay, which is marked and given feedback by the tutor. The length of the essay is recommended to be 1,500 words.

Is there an age limit for applicants?

Our courses are most suited for applicants aged sixteen and over.

What are the rates?

Courses are £130/US$150.00. After choosing a course, you can pay on-line through PayPal. Once the course is booked, you will be sent a pack of selected texts in pdf format and a syllabus from which you will be studying along with the tutor.
